Last day in Mazatlan

Our morning started with a water delivery. We took 10 5-gallon bottles and siphoned 6 into the trailer. We’ll bring the remaining 4 with us to the next stop - the beach!  Our tour guide from earlier in the week has become a friend of ours and she agreed to tour us around the parts of the city that were inaccessible in the beginning of the week due to Carnival and it’s festivities.  We drove along the Malecon (main strip along the ocean) and stopped at the local fish market. She gave each kiddo a stick with fish on it and the Frigget birds swooped down and grabbed the fish from their hands.

Next we drove up icebox hill - the tallest point of the city. In the 1800’s, before the city had electricity, they received ice deliveries from San Francisco daily to keep food preserved.  This was the point of distribution. The view was beautiful!

We drove back down the other side of the hill and saw Mazatlan’s lighthouse.

Next we stopped at Panama, a local bakery and had some yummy breakfast treats.  Alma showed us some more city sights and then took us to a locals only restaurant. For 100 pesos each (about $5), we had soup, an entree, beans and rice and a drink. It was delicious!  They serve the rice with sliced bananas - a combination I never would have thought of on my own. Next we went to the Old Town part of Mazatlan. I felt a bit overheated so I rested on a bench while the rest of the group toured. It was clean and colorful and really pretty. We popped into a ceramics store next and then moved on to the market. It was a sensory overload. We stopped for ice cream on the way back to the campsite, picked up our laundry and had some extra covid tests delivered just in case anyone developed symptoms throughout the rest of the trip.

We had a driver’s meeting at 4:30 and started the great pack up. We were settled here for a week, so it was a little bit of a job.  There was a gorgeous sunset to close out the day. We leave at 10 in the morning to head about an hour and a half north to a beachside campsite for four nights. Leftovers were dinner (from last night’s festivities) and now we’re watching Narnia before bed. What a great day!
