Carnival!
Carnival in Mazatlan was an incredible event. It’s the largest annual event in Mazatlan and we had a great time. We left the campground at 10 and were dropped off about 2/3 of the way down the “malecon” - the roadway beside the water downtown. Having thought we would be served lunch, we were surprised to find that the meal wasn’t until 2 pm, so we took off on foot to find some street food. We were not disappointed. We found pork tacos a few blocks down and they were delicious! That was sort of an appetizer so we found a beachside restaurant to have a full lunch. The setting was so pretty. The caravan had arrange front row balcony seating for the parade, so we claimed our seats and hung out.
We had a 2 pm buffet lunch that made us very glad we had already eaten.
The men went to check on the dogs (about an hour back to the campground in traffic) and Cheryl, Cathy and I took the kids back down to the street area to get Mardi Gras Gear. Pradit got into it the most - picking out a purple wig and fun mask. I also got them each a bag of confetti to throw during the parade.
The guys got back and shortly after, the parade began. The first round of floats were from the sponsors of the event - so McCormick seasoning, Pacifica beer, etc. That lasted 30 minutes or so and then there was a break while the big floats for ready.
By then it was dark and it was really neat to see the floats lit up with lights. Some even had elements of fire. Each float had a theme and a dance unit proceeded each one - all of the dancers were in costume. It was really festive and fun.
Things wrapped up around 9 pm and we headed back to the campground - tired but glad for the experience of a lifetime!
