Mulage Day 2
Last night at happy hour, the owner of the campground, Skipper, came around and asked if anyone wanted to take a boat tour on our free day. Fifteen of us raised our hands and he set up the tour for 9 am the next morning. We put our bathing suits and an extra layer on top for the boat ride and headed down the dirt road and took a right. There was a boat landing down the road where local fishermen were throwing cast off fish to some happy pelicans. Skipper finally showed up with two of his friends -- and we piled into 3 boats (after scrambling to find some lifejackets).
We rode over to Bahia Conception and set up camp on the rocky shoreline. There were cacti beyond the rocks.
Skipper beached the boat and we piled off with our belongings and the captain's gear. He set a table up on the beach and handed out snorkel gear to anyone interested. Thankfully he let me borrow his wet suit. Several of us walked up the beach to snorkel while Skipper went spearfishing for our lunch. I was warned right when we stepped into the water to plunge in and start swimming because there were stingrays all around!
The water was freezing - even with the wetsuit - and it took me a minute to catch my breath. I swam out with several fellow caravan friends and we saw some starfish, a puffer fish, and lots of coral. I tired out after a while and headed back to the beach. The three boat captains came back with a spear loaded with halibut and some "scorpian fish". They built a fire on the sand and cleaned the fish - adding tortilla chips, lemons and spices to make some sushimi.
We warmed up by the beach fire and Lucy made a sand frog. Everyone enjoyed the fish lunch (I skipped the raw fish) and we hung out on the beach for the rest of the morning. The wind started to pick up and we loaded the gear back on the boats -- which was a bit of an adventure with the high winds -- and bounced our way back to the boat landing.
The rest of the day was spent hanging out with our new friends until happy hour and a wonderful locally caught scallop dinner.
